This update replaces the previous guidance issued by HMRC on 18 June 2021.

The end date has now been deferred to 5th April 2022 for the temporary adjusted checks by HMRC. Since they have received a lot of positive feedback for offering to submit the checks remotely or through video calls, they have decided to defer the date.

HMRC has initiated a review of the availability of specialist technology to support a system of digital right to work checks in the future. The intention behind this is to introduce a new digital solution to include the many UK and Irish citizens who are unable to use the Home Office online checking service. This will also enable checks to continue to be conducted with enhanced security remotely.

Deferring the end date of the adjusted checks ensures the Right to Work Scheme continues to operate in a manner that supports employers. HMRC are also looking to implement a long-term, post-pandemic solution on this.
